Passing migrant in spring (late February – April) and autumn (August – October). It overwinters mainly in Africa and migrates to central-eastern Europe up to northern Europe and Siberia to breed.
Along the Akamas peninsula is seen mostly in groups flying over sea along the shoreline, where it sometimes stops for a break or for food. It also uses some seasonal wetlands during its migration route.
It’s a mid-sized wading bird, with the males being significantly larger on average in relation to the females. Color is mostly brownish, with darker spots on the back. Breeding plumage males have impressive black or white or chestnut tufted feathers around the head, but such individuals are rather rarely seen in Cyprus.
