KATHIKAS

Kathikas, once the largest village of Laona, is inhabited by 438 people in 2022.

A predominantly vine—growing village since ancient times. Nowdays continues the tradition with a few vine growers and small family wineries. However, in recent years the residents have turned to tourism, with local gastronomy and agrotourism providing employment to the local population. The village is famous for its traditional taverns, which attract both local and foreign visitors.

The religiousness of the village is evident both from the many churches of the village and from the religious traditions and customs. The stone-built arched church of Panagia Evangelistria in the centre of the village was renovated in 2000 with beautiful frescoes.

In the village, there is also the chapel of Agios Onoufrios, the chapels of Agia Marina and Agios Georgios, as well as the chapels of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Arkadios [ruins]. In 2005, a new chapel was built, dedicated to Agios Ypatios. The Church even founded a school in 1877 in Kathikas, where, according to historians, the priests initially taught basic literacy skills and accepted students from the surrounding villages.

Other points of interest for a visitor are the Museum of Folkloric Art, the two nature trails — the Agiasma Nature Trail and the Moundiko Nature Trail, as well as the Koronion Gorge.

Kathikas is well-known for its two regional wineries and for the production of a special variety of wine, the aromatic xynisteri.
