Erect, dwarf, spiny perennial 5 – 10 cm high, sometimes up to 30 cm, with a thick taproot. Its flowers appear in pink or vinous purple color during the period June – October. Grows on dry, bare pastures and hillsides on sandstone or igneous rocks.
